Seaport Village

Seaport Village is a destination for discovery in the harbor-side and vibrant hub in San Diego area. It is a waterfront dining, shopping, and entertainment complex spread across 14-acres. The complex is located right adjacent to San Diego Bay in downtown San Diego. You can easily find it at the intersection of Harbor Drive and Kettner. Known for recreating a harbor side setting of a century ago, Seaport Village is a carefree environment. There are 13 casual dining eateries, 54 one-of-a-kind shops, and 4 fine dining waterfront restaurants,

Seaport Village broke ground in 1978 and was first opened for the local public in 1980. The complex was developed by Morris Taubman. It is under the ownership of the Port of San Diego and is managed by Protea Management Properties. The established shops at Seaport Village are geared toward tourists. They offer merchandise ranging from specialty vendors to cruise-ware along with San Diego souvenirs.

To enjoy a perfect afternoon walk, the majority of tourists wander through the shops. They also walk the promenade and take in the blissful scenery. The walk on the meandering cobblestone pathways is perfectly surrounded by lakes, ponds, fountains, as well as colorful landscaping.

Seaport Village is actually built on a landfill over the Point of the Dead, which is known as Punta de Los Muertos in Spanish. It is called so because, in 1782, the Spanish expedition buried those who were unfortunate to die from scurvy. Later on, the area was turned into a railroad yard where goods and different types of other materials were used to arrive. Finally, it became the Seaport Village.

Seaport Village consists of many freestanding buildings which are built in unique architectural styles. Some follow Victorian style while others are more towards traditional Mexican. An interesting fact about these buildings is that there are winding paths rather than streets to connect them. They all are located within walking distance of the cruise ship terminal and the San Diego Convention Center. The Village is currently under a redevelopment plan and the construction is expected in 2025.

Seaport Village currently serves as a home to a number of bay-view restaurants. In addition, tourists enjoy a big food court along with several snack stands. A cafe, adjacent to the U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier museum is a popular spot. There is a center built in 1895 which features an amazing work of hand-carved animals.
